Before making an appointment, ask for a free phone consultation.  You can give them a brief description of your problem and ask if they have experience is treating the issues you are presenting.   You can ask what approaches they use in therapy and anything that is important for you to know.

Your therapist will gather more information about your personal history and may do evaluations or assessments related to your problems.   It’ important that you share any information that can help your therapist understand you, and your situation so they know how to help.  The information you provide your therapist is confidential but make sure you ask about confidentiality exceptions.

It’s important that you have a therapist that you feel comfortable with, but if you decide to discontinue your services because you  feel there isn’t a connection or for other reasons, it’s okay to inform the therapist that you wish to stop treatment.   Another option is to discuss with the therapist your concerns and see if there is a chance to work out any problems, but the choice if yours, do what makes you feel comfortable.

Teletherapy has shown to be just as effective as in office therapy.  The choice is often  based on the client’s needs and the environment the client feels most comfortable in.  The benefits of teletherapy are being in your own home, not having to drive or pay for parking and some people feel more open and relaxed practicing skills in their home.  With teletherapy you want to make sure you have privacy and a good internet connection.
